In the early months of 2020, the world faced an unprecedented challenge in the Covid-19 pandemic. Asked to stay home for the health and safety of our communities, every individual has adapted to these unique circumstances in their own way. At Home began as an effort to document the shared, yet separate, experience of quarantine—to take comfort in the fact that we are all processing, living and evolving within this situation together.
But on the heels of the global pandemic, something fundamentally changed. We’ve seen a mass movement for justice and an inspiring rise in support for Black Lives Matter. For us, this has added another layer of meaning and depth to the project; documenting experiences and elevating voices at this moment in time feels more powerful and necessary than ever before.
It takes courage to speak about such a personal experience. We are grateful to each and every interviewee for sharing their story and contributing to this project.
We are also incredibly indebted to Helge Mundt, who captured beautiful portraits of each of our interviewees in Berlin. Additional photos were provided by individual makers, unless otherwise noted in the caption.
At Home was created by Upperquad, an independent creative company based in Berlin and San Francisco.
