While his barbershop remains closed for the shelter in place, he has been entertained by his clients' shaggy new looks as he stays connected with them via Facetime. Tell us a bit about yourself
12 MAY 2020 Hi, thanks for having me. My name is Derek Anthony. I’m a barber, DJ and entrepreneur currently living in San Francisco, CA. I’ve been living in SF for about two and half years now and it's just been a blast! I am currently working as a barber out of Church Barbershop and Apothecary in San Francisco. It’s a great shop and has been a great experience for me. Other than that I DJ when I have the time and I have some other great things that I'm working on that I can’t quite speak about yet! But stay tuned. Idk but maybe you’ll see me cutting hair out of a conversion van one day! ;)

How have the last few weeks or months shaped or impacted your practice?
Well, being a self-employed barber, I was directly affected by COVID-19. The shop I was working out of had to close down since we were deemed nonessential. So in the meantime I adapted to the current situation by giving out Facetime tutorials to some of my clients. Taking this time to develop certain skills and work on myself—I think that's the most important. You know, taking this time to work on yourself so that way you can come out of this hopefully in a better position then you were when you started. Try not to let this time kill your hustle or drive!

What has inspired you recently?
All the people using this time to better themselves! I love watching all the live streams from DJs and all that. They are definitely doing their part by helping us stay connected. Also seeing how messed up people’s hair is. Haha, that lets me know that I’m in a good profession. People miss their barbers.

How are you coping at home?
I think there's a lot of things I could be doing better, but one thing I’ve been doing is trying to keep myself busy with projects that I normally wouldn't have time for with my busy lifestyle.
What are you looking forward to?
I’m looking forward to seeing how we all act and treat each other post COVID and shelter in place. I’m hoping it's going to be a much more peaceful time, a time for solidarity and an innovative time. We are heading into a new era, where much greatness will ensue.
