Tell us a bit about yourself

12 MAY 2020 My name is Kim Stace Thomas and I'm originally from Chicago. I've been living in the bay area for about 8 years working as a tattoo artist. I've been tattooing ten years and I'm lucky to say I recently started working at one of the best tattoo shops in the world, Seventh Son Tattoo. I'm surrounded by amazing artists and we all work together to grow and learn.

How have the last few weeks or months shaped or impacted your practice?

Covid has entirely shut down the tattooing part of my business. It's devastating to lose, especially having recently started at the shop of my dreams. Business has evolved into commission-based art, making prints, etc. The silver lining is having time to make art for art's sake and not just my next tattoo. I've painted and drawn more than I've ever done before. Thanks to technology, I have digital draw nights with friends. We keep each other motivated and supported.

How are you coping at home?

I am not a runner, but because of limited options, I've taken to running the hills in my neighborhood. I'm rewarded with awesome views and sunshine. The more I do it, the faster I get, so it's hard to justify skipping it. You have 24 hours in the day, so I can knock that out and still have the rest of the day to waste. I also do a conditioning class with my old jiu jitsu team three times a week.

I've been cooking a ton. I’ve perfected roasting a chicken. And I love watching chefs on IG—my fave is @chefchrisconsentino. I'm practicing a few of his recipes right now!

What has inspired you recently?

My peers in tattooing. People are making amazing things! It's so cool to see how people are using the isolation as inspiration. Our clients and community have come out to support us and that's been really special.

What are you looking forward to?

Hugging friends. Seeing people's whole faces when they talk. And surfing!
