Todd Tankersley has been shooting in and around the Bay Area for years, covering everything from product and lifestyle, to food and wine, and the places in between. A glass blower, sculptor and now ceramicist in his free time, Todd brings a distinct craftsmanship to everything he does. As he shelters in place with his wife and three adult children, Todd has welcomed the mixing of work and family— inviting his kids to be his crew, models and impromptu dance team.
Drawing inspiration from family

27 MAY 2020 My name is Todd Tankersley and I’m a commercial photographer based in San Francisco. I’ve been working out of my current studio for close to 20 years now. I shoot a wide range of product and lifestyle images for a variety of clients.
Covid had really put the brakes on every part of my business. I think everyone in this business are in the same situation. Everyone is trying to figure out how we can gather a crew together and photograph products or people in a manner that is safe and comfortable for everyone.
I’m at home with my wife and 3 grown kids, 2 from NY city and 1 finishing her last quarter before graduating UCLA. One thing that I try to offer is the idea that my kids can act as my crew or models for in studio shoots and have the client online watching. I have a possible shoot next week that my daughter is the hand model.
So I thought, what the heck, I’ll get a wheel and put it in the backyard.”
There are quite a few walks happening these days. No problem getting 10,000 steps in.
My son is a professional dancer and until recently was on tour with Cirque Du Soleil dancing the lead part in Volta. His siblings are quite talented dancers, as well, so we all go to the studio and make short dance videos, mostly for our own entertainment.
I had been taking ceramics classes at a local junior college when this went down. Like all schools they cancelled the remainder of classes and the future of opening is unknown. So I thought what the heck I’ll get a wheel and put it in the backyard. The kiln is coming soon.
One bit of good that has come out of this is that my whole family is together. We’re so lucky that everyone gets along so well.
I’d like to say I’m looking forward to getting back to normal but who knows what that will be.
Working with fun people making beautiful pictures is what I’d really like to get back to.
I think the best way to support me in these times is to take a look at my site and keep me in mind if you have a project that I can help out with.
