Tell us a bit about yourself

01 JUL 2020 Hi my name is Christina and I am based out of New York City. Six years ago I started a photography project called Radiant Human. My goal is to learn the relationship between color, energy and identity through a unique camera invented in the 1970’s. I have traveled throughout most of North America and taken over 45,000 aura photographs.

I was born on my dad's commune in New Mexico where I lived for some time before moving to California in the 1990s. My childhood was this weird balance between new age beliefs and emerging technology, which undoubtedly influenced my work.

Covid-19 and the Black Lives Matter movement have led to changes in the way people approach their work. How have the last few months impacted your practice?

We are living in one of the greatest times in history. Never before have we collectively been sent to our rooms and essentially grounded. There have been devastating losses, painful realities, and so much we can learn from to change. We are being challenged to think differently about how we work, how we care for our elders and the disenfranchised and how we operate as a society. There is a lot to be shaped and impacted.

Covid-19 and BLM is just the beginning—we are in a massive paradigm shift. Police brutality and social distancing are just the symptoms of a much larger problem. We have to look at what got us here in the first place—specifically how the industrialization of this planet has encouraged the spread of disease from animals to humans (great article here) and how we as white Americans have, and still do, unfairly benefit from systematic racism (another article here). There is a lot we can do—a lot we must do—but we have to stay unified and focused, otherwise there is a lot we can lose.

These are issues that impact everyone, whether they like it or not. I believe this is a major roll call of good vs. evil and there is no sitting this one out. The impact we all feel is a universal kick in the ass and calling to either advocate for love or hate.

During these times you get such invaluable perspective of what’s really important.”

How are you coping at home?

In NYC they are just starting to reopen a few places, but to be honest, we are still really cautious, so we have stayed quarantined for the most part. Family has been everything. During these times you get such invaluable perspective of what's really important. I’ve been so lucky to have a really cool, supportive and fun partner to spend this time with. He’s been working on his album, while I’ve been working on my book, so it's been a really amazing, productive and creatively rich time for us. If I had a tip for anyone it would be: find a project you love dearly and keep your loved ones close.

What has inspired you recently?

I’ve been inspired by the younger generations getting involved in so many important issues. I’ve also been really impressed with how we’ve been using our technology to stay connected, stay informed and mobilize.

What are you looking forward to?

I’m looking forward to being able to leave my building without a mask and breathe some fresh air without thinking twice. I’m looking forward to taking my daughter to the playground and not being a total freak about germs. I’m looking forward to having dinner parties and babysitters. Concerts and movies. To photograph people again!
